Predicting the position of pIOLs
March 1st 2014Predicting the position of an iris-fixated pIOL is important to ensure intraocular structure health is maintained. In this article, Dr Soltani Moghadam describes his recent study that found AS-OCT imaging technique to be particularly useful as a preoperative simulation technique.
Measuring ocular biomechanics with a new Scheimpflug-based device
March 1st 2014The CorVis ST, a new Scheimpflug-based device, has the potential to analyze ocular biomechanical properties for further research. Here, Dr Nemeth discusses his recent study analyzing the repeatability of data obtained with this new device.
Microbiological spectrum of post-traumatic endophthalmitis unchanged
February 27th 2014The microbiological spectrum in patients with post-traumatic endophthalmitis has remained unchanged over the past 14 years, with Bacillus spp. still the most commonly found infecting organism, and vancomycin remaining the drug of choice for empiric coverage of gram-positive bacteria.
Integrated laser platform receives CE Mark approval
February 7th 2014The Optimis Fusion integrated laser platform from Quantel Medical has received CE Mark approval. The system is a combination of advanced selective laser trabeculoplasty photoregeneration therapy with traditional YAG photodisruption treatment for treating both cataract and glaucoma.
Pre-op assessment should consider interactions between demographic and ocular factors
February 6th 2014Corneal refractive surgery may be more successful in eyes in which the cylinder mainly originates from the anterior cornea; therefore, in candidates for refractive surgery, surgeons should carefully assess the interaction between topographic, refractive and ocular residual astigmatism (ORA) to identify those at high risk for having significant differences between subjective cylinder and topographic astigmatism.
Managing post-refractive surgery dry eye
February 1st 2014Post-refractive surgery dry eye is an unwanted yet reoccurring problem for surgeons, according to Dr Cummings. In this article, he discusses the pre-op approach taken in his practice, which leads to a more certain diagnosis and higher patient satisfaction rates.

IOL dislocation, incorrect power most common reasons for IOL exchange
November 13th 2013The most common indications for IOL exchange are IOL dislocation and incorrect IOL power, according to study results in press for the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Patient requests for IOL exchange due to dissatisfaction have also increased, and this is especially true for patients who achieve undesired visual acuity even without photic symptoms.
Astigmatism correction with a toric IOL
November 1st 2013Traditionally, corneal astigmatism in cataract patients has been addressed through corneal correction by means of corneal incisional relaxing techniques, excimer laser keratectomy and, most recently, by means of femtosecond laser astigmatic keratotomy.
Multi-component IOL implantation; a novel concept lens
November 1st 2013In this article, the authors describe the IOL in detail and discuss a feasibility study, concluding that the concept of a multi-component IOL can help overcome any refractive problem that may arise at any time after cataract surgery.
Endophthalmitis associated with corneal suture infections
November 1st 2013In a recent study, Dr Henry and colleagues looked at a series of patients with delayed-onset endophthalmitis associated with corneal suture infections, finding that removal of loose or elevated sutures should be considered when the wound is stable to help prevent serious complications.
A rare case of endophthalmitis after PRK surgery
November 1st 2013The authors previously reported a case of a patient with a history of radial keratotomy (RK) who developed acute postoperative endophthalmitis without keratitis shortly after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgery. In this article, the authors present the case study, highlighting the importance of understanding surgical complications.
