Combined surgery enables better graft fixation
July 24th 2014A stable IOL, decreased pseudophacodonesis and improved graft fixation are the benefits of combining Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty with glued intrascleral haptic fixation of a posterior-chamber IOL in patients with aphakic or pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, according to recently published research.
Corneal topography important to monitor after CXL
July 9th 2014When performing corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL), ophthalmologists should monitor the keratoconus index and the index of height asymmetry garnered from the Scheimpflug camera, because changes in values of these indices are independent from initial corneal thickness.
DQS drops relieve persistent dry eye after LASIK
July 2nd 2014The addition of diquafosol tetrasodium (DQS) to a regimen of artificial tears and sodium hyaluronate helped relieve the symptoms of persistent dry eye in patients who had undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), according to recent research.
Posterior capsule opacification in eyes with diabetes mellitus
July 1st 2014Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a frequent and important complication noticed in diabetics undergoing cataract surgery, however, few studies have examined the prevalence of PCO in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients. Therefore, the authors performed a study exploring the long-term effect of diabetes on the incidence of PCO and here they highlight their findings.
Once daily solution achieves zero-to-trace cell severity
June 11th 2014Bromfenac ophthalmic solution 0.07% (Pro-Lensa, Bausch + Lomb) used once a day results in zero-to-trace (0–5 cells) cell severity in the anterior chamber following cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber IOL, according to newly published research.
Weather impacts on the outcome of LASIK
June 1st 2014Environmental factors have been discussed as possible triggers for diseases. Recently, the authors analysed the impact of seasonality and distinct meteorological parameters on refractive and visual outcome of LASIK in myopic eyes, here, they present the highlight of this study.
How a flapless procedure provides improved optical quality
June 1st 2014Results of a study comparing matched groups of eyes undergoing myopic correction by small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) or LASIK show that the optical quality was better and the cornea retained higher tensile strength after the flapless SMILE procedure.
Capsular tension ring decreases PCO after surgery
May 8th 2014Implantation of a capsular tension ring effectively reduces the percentage area of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and the Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rate in patients with highly myopic eyes, according to researchers in Albania and Turkey.
Multifocal intraocular lens implantation in children
May 1st 2014In children, implantation of a multifocal IOL remains a topic of debate. With lacking evidence on post surgery outcomes and no head-to-head comparison of multifocal IOLs in children, this issue remains to be clarified. Therefore, the authors of this article were prompted to perform research in this area to address a number of concerns among paediatric ophthalmologists.
High-cylinder toric IOL better for high astigmatism
April 16th 2014Cataract patients who have astigmatism of greater than 2.5 D are likely to benefit more from the implantation of a high-cylinder toric intraocular lens (IOL) than from the implantation of a low-cylinder toric IOL combined with limbal relaxing incision (LRI), according to research conducted at the Ouchi Eye Clinic and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan
Long-term follow-up of PCO in three different IOLs
April 1st 2014As the population is living for longer after cataract surgery, Dr Kugelberg and colleagues believed that a longer follow-up period was required to determine PCO rates in three different IOLs. Here, she discusses the highlights of this study.
A 3-step treatment for keratoconus
April 1st 2014The arrival of advanced therapeutic modalities for keratoconus has provided ophthalmologists with a growing menu of treatment options. The author discusses the challenge of determining which treatment is the best to use and highlights his experience with a triple procedure and a four-stage approach.
Toric IOL refractive surprises
April 1st 2014Consideration of all the available options should be made to correct refractive surprises, emphasized Dr Noel Alpins (NewVision Clinics, Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia) when speaking during the 'Assessment of Astigmatism' session at the 2013 ESCRS Congress.
Evaluating a new concept multifocal IOL
April 1st 2014Various models of mutlifocal IOLs are currently available that enable patients to see at two focal points (distant and near). These lenses have demonstrated good safety, efficacy and predictability in correcting ametropia and presbyopia after phaco surgery although some visual side effects have been observed.
