Topcon Healthcare has appointed Daniela Ferrara, MD, PhD, as chief medical officer to lead the company’s clinical and medical strategy

Daniela Ferrara, MD, PhD, is stepping into the role of chief medical officer for Topcon Healthcare, Inc., the company recently announced.1 Topcon Healthcare is recognized as a global leader in digital healthcare solutions and robotic diagnostics.
Leading the company’s clinical and medical strategy, Dr Ferrara will help advance Topcon Healthcare’s Healthcare from the Eye initiative – a connected clinical care model that detects and manages ocular and systemic diseases through the use of artificial intelligent-powered ocular imaging, the press release said.
“The opportunity to combine my scientific passion for retinal imaging with a company that is redefining healthcare through digital innovation is deeply meaningful,” Dr Ferrara said. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented team at Topcon Healthcare."

Dr Ferrara comes to Topcon Healthcare from Genentech where she most recently served as Principal Medical Director in Ophthalmology Product Development, leading integration of AI-powered retinal imaging analysis into clinical trials for both biotech and pharma.
“[Dr Ferrara] is a world-renowned physician-scientist with a remarkable track record of advancing ophthalmic innovation through rigorous clinical research, cross-sector leadership, and global collaboration,” said Ali Tafreshi, CEO and president of Topcon Healthcare, in a press release.
“Her clinical insight and deep understanding of drug and device development anchored on medical imaging make her uniquely suited to guide the next generation of AI-powered solutions for early disease detection and the potential for more comprehensive, holistic clinical care.”
Dr Ferrara’s career has also included leadership roles in various spaces: clinical development, personalized healthcare, and global strategic initiatives; as well as contributions to the development of transformative retinal therapies.
She holds an MD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a PhD in Visual Sciences from the University of Sao Paulo. Her qualifications also include authoring numerous peer-reviewed publications, serving on editorial boards of leading journals, and holding committee roles in global ophthalmic societies.
