Reichert, Inc.'s applanation tonometer, the Tono-Pen Avia, was one of 33 products named winner of a 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA).

Reichert, Inc.'s applanation tonometer, the Tono-Pen Avia, was one of 33 products named winner of a 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA). Other award winners include the Akreos AO microincision lens (model MI60; Bausch and Lomb) and the Amaris excimer laser (Schwind).

The Tono-Pen Avia is a handheld applanation tonometer with a lightweight, ergonomic design and advanced electronic measurement technology with a four times increased battery life and two large LCD screens, enabling fast and accurate intraocular pressure (IOP) readings. The supply and design has been credited to Metaphase Design Group Inc. (St Louis, US) and Medtronic XOMED (Jacksonville, US).

The awards will be presented on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in a ceremony at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East 2008 Conference and Exposition in New York City, US.
