The AutoSert, launched by Alcon at the 2012 ESCRS in Milan, is an original automated lens insertion device that can be used through small incisions.

Professor Rob Osher spoke to OTEurope and shared his experience with the new device. "The device facilitates implantation through a small incision so the surgeon can use counter traction with his free hand whilst the insertion is completed with a footswitch."The IOL injector is consistent and enhances surgical control of the IOL. The insertion can be done single-handedly and the foot pedal allows the surgeons to perform better globe stabilization.

Alcon has developed the injector so it reduces wound stretching and minimized wound disruption and trauma.Professor Osher also mentioned Alcon,s iCare, a portable tonometer, "The iCare permits the patient to accurately measure the intraocular pressure on the evening of surgery. This device can quickly differentiate elevated intraocular pressure from other causes of postoperative pain. Moreover, it is very applicable in high-risk patients undergoing cataract surgery who have a pre-disposition to a pressure spike."
