European Society of Ophthalmology 2023: Explore vision in the heart of Europe

The European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) 2023 Congress will convene from June 15 to 17 in Prague, Czech Republic. The conference venue is the Prague Congress Centre in Prague, Czech Republic, located at 5. května 1640/65, 140 21 Praha 4-Nusle.

Wagih Aclimandos, MBChB, FRCS, President, European Society of Ophthalmology, and consultant ophthalmic surgeon at King's College Hospital, London, touts the offerings of the SOE. This multi-specialty in-person meeting delivers a world class scientific program that features symposia, Young Ophthalmologist sessions, workshops, live surgery, debates, mystery cases and updates on all topics. He pointed out and urged ophthalmologists to join the activities in the “City of a Hundred Spires,” which is renowned for its historic Old Town Square, brightly decorated baroque buildings, Gothic churches and the medieval Astronomical Clock, among numerous treasures.

“For three days in June 2023, Prague will be the focal point of European ophthalmology,” he said.

Keynote lectures

Three keynote addresses are planned for the Congress.

The José Barraquer Lecture. Gerd Auffarth, MD, FEBO, will deliver a Cataract lecture titled “Current and Future Developments in Intraocular Implants for Cataract Surgery” on Thursday, June 15 from 13.30 – 14.15 Central European Time (CET).

The Robert Machemer Lecture. Marc de Smet, MDCM, PhD, FRCSC, FRCOphth is scheduled to present a Retina address titled “Greatness Comes from Tiny Footsteps” on Friday, June 16 from 13.30 – 14.15 CET.

The Richard Collin Lecture. The Oculoplastics lecture titled “Periocular Cancer (any cancer) Treatment: From Control to Prevention” will be delivered by Michèle Beaconsfield, FRCOphth FEBO, on Saturday June 17 June from 13.30 – 14.15 CET.

Suturing courses

These hands-on courses will be available on Thursday and Friday, June 15 and 16. Attendees can access the SOE website to determine availability.

This instruction helps trainees and junior doctors learn the core skills to perform ophthalmic suturing. The course will cover the basics of ophthalmic eye surgery, an overview of microsurgical instruments, and the theory of different suturing techniques.

Step-by-step video tutorials will guide the participants through their training, which is conducted at a personal workstation equipped with a microscope and suturing materials.
