A new training centre has been built in Bangalore, India, for ophthalmologists and related medical staff.

The high demand for professionally trained ophthalmologists has encouraged Geuder and Sankara Eye Hospital to develop the Sankara Geuder Competence Centre to train surgeons with the latest ophthalmic instruments and surgical techniques.

High quality ophthalmic care is required in India, as there are 12 million blind people and poverty rates are at 80%. According to figures published by Sankara Eye Care Institutions in India, training for up to 25 000 ophthalmologists and 20 000 related medical staff is needed every year.

There are future plans to make more training courses available in other Sankara Eye institutions.
