In a recently published systematic review and meta-analysis the associations of myopia with prevalent nuclear and posterior subcapsular (PSC) cataract have been confirmed.

The study, performed by Dr Chen-wei Pan et al. (Singapore Eye Research Institute, Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore), included a systematic review of literature in PubMed and Embase that were population-based studies, featuring data on myopia and age-related cataract. In total 38,007 subjects were included in 12 population-based studies that examined for this meta-analysis.

It was confirmed that myopia was associated with an increasing prevalent nuclear and PSC cataract through the meta-analysis of 7 cross-sectional studies and 1 case-controlled study. However, an association was not found to be significant between myopia with incident nuclear, cortical and PSC cataract from a meta-analysis of 3 or 4 cohort studies.
