In a press release, Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche, Spain, announced that Jorge Alió, MD, PhD, FEBOphth, FWCRS has received its 2024 International Research Excellence Award. Professor Alió is a member of the Ophthalmology Times Europe Editorial Advisory Board.

According to UMH, Prof Alió has an “excellent research career” characterised by a high level of respect from his peers.1 “He is among the [top] 2% of the most cited authors in the world in his branch of knowledge, according to the list prepared by Stanford University, published by Elsevier in August 2024, and based on the scientific impact metric created in 2019 by John P. A. loannidis,” the press release noted.

In recent months, Prof Alió has accomplished significant career milestones which highlight the decision to recognise his achievements. Following 14 years of study, he has recently presented new research data on the Lumina (AkkoLens) accommodative intraocular lens (AIOL). The press release noted that Prof Alió is the only ophthalmologist in Spain to implant this lens in cases of cataracts and presbyopia. The adaptive lens can restore a patient’s full range of vision without the need for glasses in later stages. For the March/April issue of Ophthalmology Times Europe, Prof Alió contributed an article about the AIOL and the resurgence of accommodative technologies.2

“This lens, on the contrary to multifocal and some extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses, does not cause photic phenomena, and the neuroadaptation process needed postoperatively is minimal,” Prof Alió wrote in the article. “This is a most relevant subject as photic abnormal phenomena are the main drawback of multifocal and EDOF lenses and can lead to explantation due to neuroadaptation failure.”

Prof Alió is credited with developing microincisional cataract surgery.1 His office provided additional background on the Elsevier-Stanford University Ranking, a list of the world's leading scientists and authors. The annual ranking has been published since 2019 by Elsevier in collaboration with Stanford University. Using the Scopus database, the authors determine the most influential researchers in the world, approximately 2% of the international scientific community. Standardised data used in the ranking include citations, h-index figures and a wide range of bibliometric indicators throughout a researcher's career. Prof Alió was also ranked the 7th most influential and inspiring ophthalmologist in the world in cataract and refractive surgery in The Ophthalmologist’s 2025 Power List, being the only Spanish doctor among the top 50.
