Finalists announced in EuroVeRsion case video competition for vitreoretinal fellows

The five finalists in the EuroVeRsion Case Contest have been selected and will square off against each other at the EURETINA 2022 Congress scheduled for 1-4 September 2022, in Hamburg, Germany, to see who can grab the top prizes.

The finalists are:

  • Dr Jennifer Hind, National Health Service Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom;
  • Dr Veerle Van Severen, HagaZiekenhuis, The Hague, the Netherlands;
  • Dr Raffaele Raimondi, Humanitas Research Hospital, Campania, Italy;
  • Dr Xavier Carreras Castañer, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain;
  • and Dr Pierre Gascon, Centre Monticelli Paradis, Marseille, France.

This contest is an international competitive vitreoretinal case and video symposium that pits trainee vitreoretinal surgeons against each other. The contest combines the best elements of high-quality video and case presentations presented by these young doctors, all of whom were nominated by a senior vitreoretinal surgeon.

The two top prizes are the EuroVeRsion Jury Prize, which is awarded on merit by independent judges who are senior vitreoretinal surgeons, and the EuroVeRsion Audience Prize that is based entirely on the support provided to each finalist during the final vote at the conference based on a show of hands and/or an applause noise meter.

In addition to the competitive atmosphere, the contest is also a fun break from the usual formal program content that is characteristic of the EURETINA Congress and aims to sort out the true future leaders in European Retina.

According to the EURETINA Congress when the contest was publicized, “The element of competition is introduced to raise standards and encourage audience participation. It is desirable for there to be one competitor per country, the winner may be competitively nominated at the annual meetings of national societies. The final shortlisting will be made by the competition organisers based on the outline of the presentations. The competitors must have had a role in the management of the case they present. Rare and interesting retinal cases and their management will be discussed by experienced judges in an atmosphere of good humour with a competitive edge.”

The physicians who entered were judged based on scoring according to the following three parameters all graded by scores ranging from 0 to 10: the quality of the presentation, the scientific/clinical value, and the take-home messages.

The session will take place at EURETINA 2022 as part of World Retina Day, Saturday 3 September from 8.30am to 9.30am CEST in Hall X2/Channel 7.
