Dr Ribeiro, President of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, previewed the 2024 congress
The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) holds its 2024 congress at the Fira Barcelona Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain, from 6 to 10 September. Ahead of the meeting, Ophthalmology Times Europe sought out an expert opinion on the must-see moments at the annual ESCRS Congress.
Filomena Ribeiro, MD, PhD, FEBO, is President of the ESCRS and will be presiding over a number of events at this year’s Congress. In this interview, she talks about engagement opportunities for young ophthalmologists, scaling up educational offerings to meet an ever-growing audience and putting a Spanish spin on this year’s signature “arena” sessions.
Hattie Hayes: Thank you so much for taking part in this conversation. The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) set new records with last year’s congress attendance. I am sure this year will also see a large crowd of clinicians, residents and industry support. Tell me, what are the biggest challenges and opportunities that come along with this kind of growth?
Filomena Ribeiro, MD, PhD, FEBO: Growth always presents a mix of challenges and opportunities. With the increase in attendance at the ESCRS Congress, one of our primary challenges is ensuring that we continue to deliver a high-quality, engaging experience for all participants. As our audience becomes more diverse, we have to tailor our content and sessions to cater to the varying needs of clinicians, residents and industry professionals alike.
However, this growth also brings tremendous opportunities. It allows us to broaden our scope and enhance our educational offerings, such as expanding access to state-of-the-art training facilities like the ESCRS Training Lab with its 17 cataract surgery simulators. This year, we're introducing innovative experiences like the IOL Experience Tunnel, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the first intraocular lens implantation. Additionally, we are thrilled to facilitate global knowledge-sharing sessions, involving renowned societies such as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO), International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and Brazilian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (BRASCRS), alongside various European societies. Our growth enables us to push the boundaries of what's possible in terms of learning, networking, and professional development, making the ESCRS Congress a truly unparalleled event in the ophthalmology community.
HH: This year, an initiative called “Building Our Sustainable, Inclusive Society” (BOSS) is making its debut at ESCRS. What is the BOSS Track, and how can participants get involved?
FR: The Building Our Sustainable, Inclusive Society (BOSS) initiative is a new programme we’re extremely excited to debut at this year’s ESCRS Congress. BOSS is designed to foster a more inclusive environment within the field of ophthalmology, ensuring diverse representation and providing leadership and mentorship opportunities to participants from all backgrounds. The program includes a series of networking events, mentorship sessions, and discussions that address pressing topics related to inclusion.
Participants can get involved in several ways. First, by attending BOSS sessions and mentorship and networking events, they can directly engage with thought leaders and peers on these crucial topics. We also encourage participants to visit the BOSS page on our website to learn more about ongoing initiatives and how they can contribute to fostering an inclusive community within ophthalmology.
HH: The September cover story in Ophthalmology Times Europe is all about the ESCRS Moving Simulator initiative, which is an incredible training opportunity. I know that at this year’s meeting, young ophthalmologists can take part in sessions targeting their needs. How can young ophthalmologists make the most of this year’s Congress?
FR: Young ophthalmologists (YOs) have a fantastic opportunity to benefit from the array of specialised sessions and workshops we have tailored specifically for them. This year’s Congress will feature sessions on medical writing, providing YOs with the skills needed to effectively contribute to scientific literature and enhance their professional profiles.
Additionally, the ESCRS Training Lab offers hands-on experience with the latest surgical simulation devices, an invaluable resource for young surgeons looking to advance their skills. I also recommend YOs take advantage of the mentorship opportunities available through the BOSS program, where they can connect with experienced professionals who can provide guidance and support as they navigate their careers. By actively participating in these sessions and networking events, young ophthalmologists can maximise their learning and growth at the Congress.
HH: I love the unique programming at ESCRS. The "arena" debates will return this year, in a new format unique to the conference setting in Barcelona, Spain. I also heard rumours of an escape room! As President, what are your top, can't-miss events at this year's meeting?
FR: There are several standout events at this year's Congress that I highly recommend. First, the Global Refractive Summit is not to be missed. This collaborative event with ISRS and BRASCRS will showcase some of the most exciting advancements in refractive surgery today. Additionally, the ESCRS Training Lab, with its state-of-the-art simulators, provides a unique, hands-on learning opportunity that participants are sure to find invaluable.
The "arena" debates are another highlight. This year, they will be hosted in the vibrant Tablao Arena, where attendees can enjoy a dynamic mix of scientific discourse and local Spanish culture. And yes, we do have an Escape Room! It’s a fun, interactive way to engage with peers and challenge yourself in a different setting. Finally, I encourage everyone to attend the inaugural JCRO Symposium and the EU Trials Spotlight session, both of which promise to deliver groundbreaking insights and discussions.
By attending these events, participants will gain a comprehensive view of the latest advancements and trends in ophthalmology, all while enjoying the unique and vibrant atmosphere of Barcelona.
